The University of Otago offers over 150 different qualifications, in Humanities, Law, Sciences, Health Sciences, Education, and Commerce. Courses are taught at undergraduate and postgraduate level on campus and through the distance learning programme.
- Papers are the individual academic components of courses. Each paper has an associated number of points towards a qualification
- Major subjects are the primary area of study in an undergraduate degree. Each programme and major will have their own requirements
- Minor subjects include a selection of papers taken alongside a major subject as part of some undergraduate degrees
- A double degree is a programme of study that leads towards two separate qualifications, taken concurrently
Planning for a programme of study should take into consideration:
- Pre-requisite and co-requisite requirements for the course's papers
- Paper restrictions where papers share a large amount of content
- The study workload for the course — the total points required, and hours of study per week
In addition to standard enrolments, the University offers:
- Interest-only study for domestic students wishing to attend classes only (no assessment, results, or credit)
- A Certificate of Proficiency (COP) enrolment, for papers taken in specific circumstances
